Epilepsy Foundation Virginia

The Epilepsy Foundation Virginia is a statewide organization delivering and coordinating services throughout Virginia. Services are provided from the central office in Charlottesville in the University of Virginia Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. Three regional offices and volunteers statewide provide services as well. Virginians are eligible for services at no fee.

This statewide affiliate of the national Epilepsy Foundation was established in 1978 to promote awareness of epilepsy and to provide assistance to those with the disorder. In promoting awareness on what to do when someone has a seizure, the Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia (EFVA) has organized educational articles and talk shows in the media. The public education program have reached over 2 million Virginians We have also trained thousands of police officers, school bus drivers school nurses and emergency technicians.

Addressing the second part of our mission, provide assistance, we have provided specific information about epilepsy, or given referral, or made the Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia web pages available to 10,000 persons who were affected by epilepsy. Each year persons benefit from our medication assistance program and some have used our transportation program, which includes bicycles and helmets. A camp for children with epilepsy and other disabilities is a continuous success. We help the research effort to find cures.

Our mission has been reinforced by a recently approved strategic plan that envisages expanding services to persons with epilepsy. There are presently 80,000 Virginians with epilepsy.
