Three Programs Cover Kindergarten – Grade 12
The Epilepsy Foundation has developed and tested a series of classroom programs — collectively known as Take Charge — that help students understand and support their classmates who live with epilepsy.
Each program
- Uses age appropriate language, graphics, videos, and other tools
- Strives to educate students about epilepsy and seizures
- Pushes for including epilepsy education units in school health and science classes.
Students who complete one of these programs will have an age-appropriate ability to
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of epilepsy as a medical condition
- Identify and learn about different types of seizures
- Know what to do and what not to do when someone is having a seizure
Through these programs, we hope to dispel myths and reduce misunderstandings about epilepsy among young people.
Elementary School Program
After a few years of using modified versions of the Take Charge series for younger students, the Foundation saw the need to design a program specifically for elementary school students. Therefore in 2016, the Foundation created Take Charge of the Storm Jr. for elementary school aged children in grades K-5.
Middle School Program

Seizures and You: Take Charge of the Storm is the epilepsy awareness program for middle school students ages 11–14.
High School Program

Seizures and You: Take Charge of the Facts is the epilepsy awareness program for teens in high school.
The Epilepsy Foundation provides a program kit with a facilitator's guide, a CD-ROM containing essential materials, and a DVD that teens can use to help raise awareness at their school.
