School Personnel Training Mandate

Yes, by December 31, 2026, each public and accredited nonpublic school must provide training to all school personnel on seizure recognition and first-aid. All school personnel must be trained in seizure recognition and first-aid response every two years. Training for school personnel must be consistent with training programs and guidelines developed by the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

Delegation of Rescue Medication

Yes, at least one designated staff member at each school must be trained and authorized to administer FDA-approved seizure rescue medications, medications prescribed to treat seizures, or a manual dose of prescribed electrical stimulation using a vagus nerve stimulator magnet. The presence of a full-time school nurse can fulfill this role. 
 

Student Training Mandate

Yes, the state board of education shall adopt rules to establish a seizure education program for the purpose of providing school districts and accredited nonpublic schools an age- appropriate program on seizures and seizure disorders. Participation in the program is optional for schools. Training for students must be consistent with guidelines developed by the Epilepsy Foundation of America.
