Stay Strong and Keep Moving Forward
Person with Epilepsy
Tuesday, August 13, 2024
My name is Emmanuel. I am 35 years old, and I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1998, I was diagnosed with epilepsy following a severe seizure caused by a high fever. From that point on, I went through several years of trial and error with medications until finding the right combination for my situation. Over the years, I had multiple changes in medication and different dosages.
In 2020, during the pandemic, I had an electroencephalogram (EEG), and after receiving the results, I visited my doctor. For the first time, the results were positive: no seizures. It was a completely normal study. Being a skeptical person, I thought something had gone wrong with the study. I let time pass and the following year, in June 2021, I had another EEG. Once again, the result was normal. Continuing with this trend, in 2022 I went to another medical center and had a third EEG. The result was also very good, with no seizures.
That year, when I visited my doctor, he recommended that I could start reducing the medication if I wished. Considering that my last seizure was in June 2016, we decided to start reducing the daily dosage of medication. Those were not easy days, as I experienced a lot of anxiety and fear, but on March 21 of last year, I took my last dose of medication. I have been medication-free for over 14 months, and it has been eight years since my last seizure. It is very difficult to stay stable and free from negative thoughts, but little by little, I made progress, and things got better.
I hope this story can help whoever reads it. Not everything is impossible, and although every case is different, we must be strong and keep moving forward.
