Remembering Kaire
Lost a Loved One to Epilepsy
Wednesday, October 9, 2024
My brother, Kaire Hughes, experienced his first seizure the summer before his third year of high school. Coming from five healthy and active siblings, this sudden development was confusing and shocking. It left us with countless unanswered questions and feelings of uncertainty. Despite the challenges, we were determined to provide as much support as possible.
However, things took a significant turn during his senior year when Kaire was informed he couldn't participate in sports, something he was deeply passionate about. Despite this setback, he continued to support his older brother Brenden and his team from the sidelines, which gave us hope. As he graduated and received an official diagnosis of epilepsy, it brought a sense of relief to our family. Witnessing him graduate was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life.
Throughout the following summer, Kaire focused on preparing for the next chapter of his life. At just 16 years old then, I didn't fully comprehend the challenges he faced. I watched as he researched ways to minimize his seizures and adapt to his new reality. Although he wasn't fond of medication, he understood its necessity at the time. He explored different lifestyle changes and adjustments required for living with epilepsy. Transitioning into college life at the University of Houston, he persevered through challenges, demonstrating resilience and determination. While he was away from home, I remained in close contact, admiring his courage and determination to live a fulfilling life despite his condition.
Tragically, on October 16, 2020, Kaire passed away after experiencing a seizure in his sleep. His sudden departure shattered our hearts and left us grappling with grief and disbelief. Through this devastating experience, I gained a deeper understanding of my brother and the challenges he faced. I decided to share our story because I realized the power of community and the importance of sharing experiences.
I want people to learn about epilepsy and how to support people with seizures. The Seizure First Aid Training and Certification has provided the knowledge and skills to respond to seizures and support people effectively. Through this training, I've gained confidence in my ability to assist others during seizure emergencies and contribute to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for those living with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation's commitment to education and empowerment has been instrumental in enhancing my understanding of epilepsy and equipping me with practical tools to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals affected by this condition.
Before discovering this platform, I felt isolated in my journey with epilepsy. However, by sharing my story, I hope to connect with others who may be going through similar experiences and let them know that they are not alone. I want to offer support, encouragement, and solidarity to anyone navigating the challenges of epilepsy, and to contribute to building a community where we can uplift and empower each other. I'm grateful for the support of my family, the Epilepsy Foundation, and the opportunity to share our story. In honoring Kaire's memory, I hope to raise awareness and provide comfort to others navigating similar journeys.
In the face of adversity, we discover the strength within us to overcome life's challenges. My brother Kaire's journey with epilepsy taught me invaluable lessons of resilience, courage, and love. Despite the obstacles he faced, he approached each day with unwavering determination and a contagious spirit of optimism. His legacy serves as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can find light and hope. I encourage you to embrace each day with gratitude, cherish the moments with loved ones, and never lose faith in your ability to overcome. Together, we can turn our struggles into sources of strength and inspire others to keep pushing forward, no matter the obstacles that lie ahead.
