My daughter was experiencing what seemed like ticks for almost a year before she experienced her first major seizure. I ignored them and minimized them because I thought she was just half asleep and that was why she was spilling her cereal in the mornings.

Then, I found her one morning having a seizure. It was one of the most terrifying moments in my life. I had no idea what to do or how to help. My daughter just turned 12 years old.

The diagnosis was tough on her because, in our family’s worry and fear, we started restricting her activities more and more. She is a gymnast and was told at first that she would have to quit gymnastics and “find another sport.”

It was also difficult because she was trying to adjust to the changes her body was experiencing as she became accustomed to taking daily seizure medications.

Together, we learned more about medication management, understanding her body, and how to care for and treat her. However, the need to continue to be free led her to live her life to the fullest potential - with no restrictions.

My daughter has learned to live with epilepsy and as a result, so has our family! Since her diagnosis, she continues to do gymnastics competitively and has competed on American Ninja Warrior Junior.

She is fearless and free, and our family is very proud of her.
