At eight years old, I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and it changed the trajectory of my life. Suddenly, I was different from everyone around me and felt alone. Living with epilepsy changed the way I operated through typical life milestones like driving a car, swimming, going to school, and even the everyday task of taking a shower. I had to shape and mold my life around this disorder.

The Epilepsy Foundation branch in South and Central Texas provided an opportunity for me to go to summer camp, Camp Brainstorm, in 2009, which was its inaugural year. The Foundation made provisions for my family at no cost through its efforts. I was able to swim, kayak, dance, fish, zipline, rock climb, and even participate in a talent show. Being that it was my first time away from home, I was brought out of my shy bubble, and it jumpstarted my passion for performing.

I am 1 in 26. Without camp and the constant support of the Epilepsy Foundation, I would not be the woman I am today. After attending Camp Brainstorm through my senior year of high school, I vowed to always help kids like me. The Epilepsy Foundation provides more than camp. They have campaign fundraisers, support groups, 5ks, and much more for the community. I was even able to participate in the “Lemonade for Livy” fundraiser, where I hosted a lemonade stand to raise funds for epilepsy research, advocacy, and awareness. I also plan to go to Washington, D.C., to attend the National Epilepsy Walk at the National Mall.

Through my advocacy, Temple College and local theatres have started including warnings on shows for audience members who may have epilepsy and may struggle with flashing lights. This minor change has impacted so many people around me. My goal is to reach many more who have stories like mine.
