Drug Alert: Lamotrigine and Risk for Immune System Reaction
Epilepsy News From: Monday, April 30, 2018
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning that Lamictal (compound name lamotrigine) has a very rare risk of immune system problems. The drug may activate or trigger the body’s immune system and cause severe inflammation in the body. This can lead to hospitalization and death if it’s not found and treated quickly.
Symptoms of this immune system reaction may include fever and rash and may lead to problems with blood cells and other parts of the body.
This reaction can be mistaken for other side effects or health problems. If a person taking lamotrigine develops symptoms, they should call their health care provider immediately and seek medical attention.
- This reaction is very rare and not all rashes that happen with lamotrigine are serious problems.
- Do not stop taking lamotrigine suddenly without talking to your health care provider. Stopping seizure medications quickly can lead to uncontrolled seizures. Since it is also used for the treatment of bipolar disorder, new or worsening mental health problems could be seen if it is stopped quickly.
- Contact your health care provider if you have concerns about this medication or your treatment plan overall.
