Community Corner: Journeys in Epilepsy – Transitions to #AdultingWithEpilepsy
Epilepsy News From: Wednesday, December 13, 2017
For most of us, epilepsy is truly a journey. The journey will vary and include travels through the medical system to find the right care at the right time. Your journey will also vary according to your age, social situation, family issues, and where you are and where you are going in life.
This process of change from one situation to the next is called transitions. One example is a teenager transitioning from a pediatric health care setting to adult care. The issues will be different and the young adult will be assuming responsibility, maybe for the first time, over his or her care. This type of transition takes a great deal of planning and should involve the health care team, family, and person with epilepsy.
But what about transitions outside of the medical setting? What if you are a young adult and you are trying to learn “adulting” skills? Or even just figuring out how epilepsy may affect you as a young adult?
Join the Epilepsy Foundation on Facebook Live on Sunday, December 17th, at 4:00 p.m. ET to talk about it.
Journeys in Epilepsy: Transitions to #AdultingWithEpilepsy
Our guest expert is Elizabeth (Liz) Dueweke, a young woman who has offered to share her story and the challenges of #AdultingWithEpilepsy. Liz was diagnosed with epilepsy in her senior year of high school. Seizures complicated college life, but she graduated on time and has since obtained a master’s degree in public health. After much hard work, her seizures have become controlled. But the challenges of taking medicines, managing side effects, and dealing with how epilepsy affects work, relationships, and life planning still happen every day.
Liz works at the Epilepsy Foundation as the manager of communications, where she strives to bring life-changing information to those who need it most. Liz’s willingness to share what she has learned will expand our thoughts about transitions in epilepsy and how the Epilepsy Foundation can help.
