Christina Bergqvist MD on Ways the Ketogenic Diet has Evolved as a Treatment for Seizures
Epilepsy News From: Tuesday, June 27, 2017
The Charlie Foundation interviewed Christina Bergqvist MD from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to learn about how she uses ketogenic diet therapy for her patients with epilepsy. Listen as she talks about changes over the years related to when children are referred for dietary therapy, how long people with epilepsy are staying on the diet, and new situations where the diet is being used.
Dr. Bergqvist recently built a special kitchen at her hospital to train families in ketogenic cooking while their child is being initiated onto the diet. She prescribes ketogenic therapy after the failure of two anti-seizure medications instead of waiting for several anti-seizure drugs to fail. Dr. Bergqvist is also a national leader in using ketogenic diet therapy in cases of status epilepticus, a severe condition of uncontrolled seizures.
