Prioritizing My Health With Epilepsy
Person with Epilepsy

My journey with epilepsy began in middle school when I started experiencing migraines. Fast forward a few years later, and I began experiencing visual auras without migraines, which my doctor said could be a sign of seizures. A few months later, I had my first seizure in September of 2020 while waitressing on a high-stress day.
Shortly after, I got an EEG, which confirmed my epilepsy diagnosis. I was immediately put on a medication that impacted me negatively and made me feel tired all the time. Eventually, I switched to another medication and have been doing well for the most part. I have experienced a handful of breakthrough seizures, but only one injury, thankfully. I got a black eye from falling face-first into my nightstand.
My biggest challenge has been memory loss and staying on top of my diet, sleep, and alcohol intake. As a 22-year-old, it can be difficult to miss out on certain things with my friends, like concerts. Despite this, I have come to find comfort in knowing that other people understand what I’m going through. It’s not always easy to step back when I want to say yes to everything, but prioritizing my health has taught me the value of balance. I’ve learned that real friends will support me no matter what and that missing one night out doesn’t mean missing out on meaningful connections.
I was ashamed of my epilepsy for so many years, and I don’t want others to feel the way I did. Don’t let a diagnosis stop you from believing in yourself. I started my own photography business in November of 2023, which has since blossomed into something I’m incredibly proud of.
