Puberty Seizures?

Wed, 04/04/2007 - 21:10
My daughter was diagnosed with complex partial seizures when she was 6 years old. By the age of 8 1/2 she was finally seizure free and off all medications. She has not had any seizures until now age 12. She has just started her period. Has anyone ever had any experience with this.

Hi Karrah, My name is Zane

Hi Karrah, My name is Zane and I have seizures - so I'd like to tell you my story. I had my first seizure when I was about 13, then I started having seizures about every 18 months (assuming there were no other seizures my mum didn't know about?).I have been on all sorts of medication/tried changing my lifestyle and my eating, but so far nothing has worked. I am 22 years old now and I now have a seizure about once every 8-12 weeks (It has been like this for the past few years). After a seizure I will usually recover for a day (spitting/fatigue/sore joints/light aversion etc). My seizures have only ever happened at sleeping/waking up. So to summarize for everyone, seizures starting at age 13, starting at 18 month intervals - then slowly becoming more frequent until maturing at around one seizure every 8-12 weeks about 5-6 years later. My seizures appear to be a 'build up', I've never experienced seizures in short succession. i.e if I had a seizure, I wouldn't have another seizure a week later. My seizures have always followed a sort of pattern.I've been on sodium withroape/other seizure medications, but they made me feel EXTREMELY drowsy during the day (didn't have energy to do anything), and they also made me sleep for long durations (up to 16 hours). One of the seizure professionals I met when I was younger suggested my seizures were caused by puberty/development, and he thought that once I had fully developed they would stop. Based on whats happened since they started this has been the most plausible explanation I've received, so I'm hoping they stop and I don't have to live with them forever. I hope I helped, Zane.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I've had simple partial seizures since I was 41/2, I had a grand mal when i was 5, had a small partial seizure once every 2 years from 5 until i was 13. When I was 13 almost 14, whamo! they suddenly got worse. They went from being just a weird tingling in my upper arm and me not knowing whether i hit my elbow or had a seizure all the way to my head turning, shoulder twitching, and i get a tingling down my right side. Still not big seizures but bigger than they used to be. They also go more frequent. I now have them about twice to 3 or 4 times a week. Puberty screws everything up.

I kind of have experience
