Puberty Seizures?

Wed, 04/04/2007 - 21:10
My daughter was diagnosed with complex partial seizures when she was 6 years old. By the age of 8 1/2 she was finally seizure free and off all medications. She has not had any seizures until now age 12. She has just started her period. Has anyone ever had any experience with this.

It seems no one has really cleared up the JME thing here.  For some of you who may be confused when reading this, JME is juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.  "Typically" (you know how that is very subjective in neurology) the way it works if you have it from birth but it doesn't show up until puberty when it pops up as myoclonic "jerks".  Then usually when you enter adulthood, the grand mals (tonic clonic) appear.  I was not diagnosed until my first grand mal at 18 because my parents, knowing nothing about epilepsy (not hereditary) saw the jerks as clumbsiness.  I only have 1 set pattern amoung every grand mal, they have ALL been on my period.  I have one beautiful healthy baby boy.  We were going to try for another.  Another grand mal detered those plans.  My gyno is now planning on putting me on a pill (not the shot) that takes away ovulation and period.  This controls the up and down shift of hormones.  So there won't be that time frame to raise the chance of seizure.  Hormones aka puberty, has everything to do with epilepsy, girl or boy.

Hope you don't mind my asking...how old are you now? are you still having seizures? If not, what type of meds have worked for you? My daughter has had only grand mal seizures they also happen during her menstrual cycle. The 1st was at age 13 the same year she started her first cycle. She's 19 now. Still having seizures. On 300 mg Topomax daily.

I hope you have heard from the doctor. My experiences with seizures is just about what your daughter has experienced. I never had a seizure until I hit puberty. The change in hormones from 6 year old to a 12 year old is why most has begin to have seizures again or at all. Some tend to grow out of it once the hormones have hit a stablizing level while others (like me) will not. My are grand mal, but i only have them when i am stressed and or have no sleep. I am only on one medication depekote and i take 750mg a day. I have had a seizure for going on two years and before my last one it was going on a year. I am about to turn 23 and have had seizures since i was 12. I wish the best for you and your daughter.
