My daughter has been on lamictal for awhile now and the Dr increased her dose and i swear her seizures and falls are worse.  Can the lamictal be causing more seizures.  Shes also on 2000 mg of keppra daily.  Thanks for any input!

My 8yr old has ADD and staring spells 2 or 3 times each year (lasting a few minutes.) There have even been several years, when she didn't have one at all.  These spells happen/triggered when she has a really bad flu/cold and her immunity is low.  (She has come a long way: had stroke at 3mos, infantile spasm at 8 mos that was resolved. ) I have been researching Lamictal with an ADD/HD psychologist and found lamictal is good for sustaining attention and for complex partial seizures, which we thought might address these few spells.  Reading all your posts, overall, I feel a bit worried.  If she had seizures often this would not be an issue, but given that right now she is doing so well I worry about Lamictal increasing the seizures. Anyone in a similar situation? If so, what did you do?

katika,

My 6 year old daughter has atypical absence seizures and takes Depakote and Lamictal, both. I have never heard of Lamictal causing more seizures, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I would seek out the advice of a neurologist. We have had great response from this drug, and to date have only had minimal side effects from the Depakote. This biggest concern my daughter's neurologist had was that this drug can seldom cause a severe rash occuring around and in the mouth, and in the throat. If you should see this side effect , seek medical treatment immediately, as you do not want her throat to close up!! Increases in dosage should be done slowly to avoid side effects, as well. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Thank you for the fast response, Lynda. Talking to the neuro sounds like a good idea.  I am glad it is working for your daughter and I hope we will also  have good results. Kati
