Need a Little Advice for TLE

Fri, 05/26/2006 - 12:06
Hi All, Since being diagnosed with TLE, 1yr ago after a GMal, I have had what I now know as Complex Partial seizures for the past 2-3 yrs. For a long time I just thought I was having major Déjà vu type experiences. When I had an EEG and MRI they both showed nothing unusual. My confusion is that I have been told that I have Complex Partial Seizures but from reading info I understand that you generally lose consciousness and although I cannot speak nor really understand what is being said during the episode, I can gesture and am completely aware of my surroundings. Depending on the degree, I am sometimes confused afterwards for a bit. Anyone else with similar symptoms. I am on 1000 Keppra a.m. and p.m. and still can have 1-3 per day. Some days none. The neuro has suggested I up the meds by 500mg per day to try and control. Tks, for any thoughts and best wishes, Rita

Just a bit of clarification on the difference between seizure types. In complex partial, there's an alteration or change in level of awareness - sometimes it looks like person is fine but they aren't fully aware of what is going on and may not recall all or part of it afterwards. The amount of awareness that people retain can vary a lot. Note that whether or not a person can speak isn't clearly related to awareness, it depends on whether the language areas of the brain are involved in the seizure. For example in a complex partial seizure, people may not speak at all, may speak but not make sense, may talk fine, or just make noises or other sounds. In simple partial - there's no change in level of awareness or consciousness. There is a change in behavior of some sort, but person is aware of symptoms. When a seizure secondarily generalizes, there is a loss of consciousness. The terms can certainly be confusing! Here are some links to content on epilepsy.com on partial seizures. Take alook at the professional site as well. There are also videos of what seizures look like.

The terms really can be confusing . When my neuro told me what my diagnosis was I tried to ask as many questions as I could think of but given the nature of this I now realize there are so many variations possible. I do feel a lot better with my understanding of the "impaired consciousness" which I most definitely have. Also I have read throughout the various websites that emotional levels can be altered but the neuro couldn’t really verify whether this was a medication related symptom or just a symptom of a new illness with all of the ramifications like loss of job, no license, and meds. It has been a year for me and I am just beginning to gather the information and strength to continue my journey. Again, thanks so much. Rita
