12 year old with complex febrile seizures

Wed, 09/09/2009 - 09:25
I have searched everywhere trying to find any parent that has had a child with febrile seizures over the age that most children outgrow them....to no avail.  My son has had complex febrile seizures since he was 13 months old, he is now 12 and half years old. His latest seizure was yesterday and once again accompanied with a fever due to a case of strep throat.  Our neurologist told us a year ago that my son is in the 5 percent of children that have them over the age of 7.  But, I, however can not find any child/parent that has had our same experience.  Will my son ever outgrow these seizures?  I am disheartened.  I had been told for years that he would, but he has not. Why is he not outgrowing them, when most children do?  Please.....any answers?

hi - my son is turning 6 in 3 months and he had a seizure last friday (strept+high fever); this would he his 5th, the first he had was at 2.5 years old; all high fever triggered: but i have an epileptic cousin and my son had already a complex FS at 4 - which slightly increase my son's chances of getting epilepsy later in life SO, so far not really worrying, but, just like you all i got really disorientated by the fact he still got one at this age, while the doctors told us that he shoudl grow out of them by the age of 5 (now I have learned it's 6...) i jave done some reasearch on my own and foud out about a recent classification of the fever seizures for kids older then 6: GEFS (generalized epilepsy with fever seizures), here: http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/gefs.html it's not much regardless to what we all know already, but it brings a bit of perspective to our concerns.. good luck to you all!

My daughter now 10 has had fever related seizures since the age of 2. Some years ago we discovered ascorbate a product of the vitamin c foundation she takes 4 grams per day. My thought was kill the virus and. there will not be a fever and no episode. My daughter has been virus free / seizure free for 2 years. We also give her dha from lifesdha as an omega3. Our seizure free period ended last weekend she caught strep got a fever had a seizure. We have treated strep aggressively, just missed this one. We are meeting with her doc to discuss removal of the tonsils. Her seizures are generally 3 minutes recovery 30 - 40 minutes.
