12 year old with complex febrile seizures

Wed, 09/09/2009 - 09:25
I have searched everywhere trying to find any parent that has had a child with febrile seizures over the age that most children outgrow them....to no avail.  My son has had complex febrile seizures since he was 13 months old, he is now 12 and half years old. His latest seizure was yesterday and once again accompanied with a fever due to a case of strep throat.  Our neurologist told us a year ago that my son is in the 5 percent of children that have them over the age of 7.  But, I, however can not find any child/parent that has had our same experience.  Will my son ever outgrow these seizures?  I am disheartened.  I had been told for years that he would, but he has not. Why is he not outgrowing them, when most children do?  Please.....any answers?

I just want to say that  your not alone! Our son had his first febrile seizure when he was 5 months old. And from that first one we were told that since it had lasted for so long (and he was seizing in the flight for life as well) that he had some brain damage. He does currently have a learning disability, but he is very coordinated and athletic :) he is 7 and a half years old, and has had around 10 thus far. He recently had a febrile seizure from strep and slight pnhumeonia. The doctor wants to do an EEG since he is past the textbook age for having febrile seizures. He just wants to make sure that he isn't developing epilepsy? From my understanding, febrile seizures can turn into epilepsy. But what it sounds like from here, that that isn't necessarily so! :) I don't always listen to what the docs say because when our son was just a little guy the neurologist was trying to put him on Kepra. And if we would have done THAT then we would have NEVER realized that he had seizures due to a fever.
