Smoking marijuana and drinking

Thu, 02/07/2008 - 01:51
I was just reading on this website all of the forums about drinking and smoking cigarettes and how bad they are for you. It didnt say anything about weed and I smoke weed maybe once a week or once every two weeks and is it bad for having seizures? Also if you drink maybe two beers to three beers once a weekend is that bad?

WEM 511 how long have you been smoking weed? I've been just over two years and so far so good. I had a lot of small sez and at least four grand mals a month. Since smoking no grandmals and maybe 1-2 small sez and some days I'm free of epilpesy all around ( ^%^%$^%$^) That's me dancing lol.

Alcohol will trigger one so I stay clear of booze but I don't miss booze anyway. Hopefully this year we can pass medical MJ here in Mi. I'd love to grow my own. Love that hydro.

The most common view is that marijuana is not good for you. There are some reports of decreased seizures with it's use, but others with worsened seizures.  Also, the more one uses, the worse memory is and then people start mixing up medicines, and end up having more seizures. Keep in mind that mixing recreational drugs with prescribed drugs will result in more side effects and these could be dangerous. And lastly, since it is an illegal drug, and it is not an indicated or approved treatment for seizures, a person using marijuana for seizures would be subject to the laws of that state/country.

RE drinking alcohol - while 'moderation' is usually ok by most common standards, everyone should talk to their own doctors about it's use. It is a depressant and can affect the brain directly, causing side effects. Alcohol when used regularly could interact with seizure medicines as well. Result could be that people get 'drunk' more easily from combination of alcohol and AEDs, and seizures could be affected.  The combined effects of alcohol and some of the AEDs could be very dangerous. A person who uses alcohol regularly would be at risk for having 'withdrawal' seizures, or increased seizures after they have drank. Lastly, regular use of alcohol also impairs memory leading to more inconsistent use of seizure medicines.

Hope this info helps. Make sure to talk to your own doctor and follow their advice! Alcohol and marijuana are drugs too and should be considered carefully.
