Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: what does it feel like?

Sat, 06/06/2009 - 13:00

Hi Everyone!

This is my first time on this site and I am glad to have found you all!  I was "diagnosed" with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy 18mths ago following years of strange symptoms, 3 abnormal EEG's and an MRI which showed a leision in the Lt T Lobe.  I was supposed to take Lamictal but so far am too scared to.  I have different symptoms including, fear, shivering, dizziness, visual disturbances, etc.

My neurologist now thinks because my symptoms have changed i.e. shivering and some twitching of limbs occasionally, and a weird feeling that my stomach is rising into my throat and choking me ( at night) that I should have a Video EEG to clarify things.  I really don't want to take Meds until they are SURE that the diagnosis is correct because I react badly to meds.

I would be really grateful if anyone could shed any light on what TLE is like for them and also if you have had the Video EEG what it's like.

Thanks!

Idk if this sounds familiar

Idk if this sounds familiar or not, but I'm 17 and sometimes when I'm doing homework or having a conversation with somebody or doing something I forget what I'm saying or doing and I stutter and it's like my brain shuts off and I can't think and it's usually followed by the feeling of the static channel of a TV in my head. Sometimes I'll also just start hearing the quiet but high pitched sound an older tv makes when you turn it on and it's usually followed by being unable to concentrate and completely losing my thoughts and feeling like I got drugged or something. I've gone to my doctor about it 3 times and told me that it's just stress and she refused to refer me to a neurologist because she said I'm just stressed out and she sent me to my therapist which doesn't help at all by the way. Do you have any advice on what I could do to get my brain checked? I've never had any brain scans ever in my entire life, even though my dad had seizures when he was my age. I really need help, I know somethings wrong but everyone tells me that I'm crazy and over exaggerating when I try explaining my symptoms to them? Help?

I will tell you what TLE feels like for me.  I was diagnosed with it in 2003.  It feels different for each person, depending on which part of the temporal lobe is experiencing the electrical discharge.  The temporal lobe is a part of the brain where fear/panic originates.  I feel disoriented when one hits, and a 'false' reality hits me in a matter of seconds, always paranoid and fear-based.  Within a matter of seconds my system is usually in a state of sheer panic.  I have no choice but to watch this false reality replace the real one.  It is horrific.  Have you ever experienced the effects of a fast-acting drug on your system?  This is what a complex partial seizure feels like for me.  For you it might be different, however.  Epilepsy has as many symptoms for different people as there are different parts of the brain to experience acute discharges.  Mine are fear-based, and it's a living hell.  I'll survive somehow...

I have that!! Mine is triggered by high pitched noise.  The fear is not something you can explain.  It's like the fear you would feel when falling off a building? The type of fear that knocks the wind out of you.
