benign rolandic epilepsy

Fri, 07/07/2006 - 11:43
My son has been diagnosed with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He is 8 years old. He has only had seizures in his sleep and they have all been within the 1st 20 to 30 minutes of falling asleep. He has only had 6 since Dec. 2003 but within the last 2 1/2 weeks he has had 3. They are pretty scary. They only last less than a minute or so but he drools alot and is unconscious during them. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also we are not on any medications right now because our doctor says this type of epilepsy is not always treated because kids usually grow out of it at adolescents.

Re: benign rolandic epilepsy: increase in seizures

Hi, I'm new to this site, but wanted to share the following: My son's 13 in 2 days, and was diagnosed with BRE 3 years ago. We decided not to medicate, and last summer the seizures had all but stopped after using herbal medicine (main ingredient sarsaparilla!) The fits started again with the stress of him starting at a school where he was very bullied, but were still at a manageable level. In 6 months of schooling, he only had two at school. Recently, though, the fits have started escalating, from a couple a week to a couple or more a day. The escalation really increased after he got a tummy bug (a CT scan showed enlarged glands in his stomach), and also changed so that, rather than having a warning a fit was coming, he's just been hurling straight into them, even from standing. They're also now even more violent than they used to be. We were really hoping that the seizures would pass when he reached 13, but that looks highly unlikely now. Does anyone else have experience of BRE worsening before clearing? We're really hoping that the tummy bug has irritated and exacerbated the seizures, and that once that goes the seizures will ease off. Any suggestions or similar stories gratefully received - thanks.

Hello, I am a single mom from

Hello, I am a single mom from Hong Kong. I can hardly find detail information or any discussion like this forum in Hong Kong. While I read through all these comments here, I broke into tears. My son is almost 5 years old, he diagnosed as Rolandic Seizure on the date of his 4 years old birthday. He had his first seizure right at the time of his birthday and he was sleeping. It lasted around 4-5 mins and he even couldn't control his eyes after seizure. I asked him to look at me but his eyes still looked at the side. I was freaking out and called the ambulance to hospital immediately. He has his seizure around few times a month and recently has been even more frequent. He was asleep every time he had his seizure. I refused to put him in medicine. He is a sweet and smart boy, very kind with empathy. I don't want the medicine brings him any side effect. I am trying out Chinese herbal, seems that the frequency of his seizure didn't have significant decreased, but the level of seizure seems improved. It is now usually last for less than a min and only happened on his face, he seems he is conscious when it happens. And could able to fall asleep again immediately after that. I am also struggling if i should put him in medicine. And as a mom, of course I am worry if the seizure really not impacting his brain? I am alone here and feel helpless.

Yes my son has same issues
