benign rolandic epilepsy

My son has been diagnosed with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He is 8 years old. He has only had seizures in his sleep and they have all been within the 1st 20 to 30 minutes of falling asleep. He has only had 6 since Dec. 2003 but within the last 2 1/2 weeks he has had 3. They are pretty scary. They only last less than a minute or so but he drools alot and is unconscious during them. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also we are not on any medications right now because our doctor says this type of epilepsy is not always treated because kids usually grow out of it at adolescents.

Not so far. He is really leaving it up to us. He has indicated that it is not dangerous to him. We just did a repeat EEG and will find out results tomorrow. Previous EEGs have not been classic for BRE but he says all the symptoms are. We repeated the EEG because it has been a year and he says that children's brains are changing every day and that we may repeat the EEG and it comes back classic for BRE. He says if it does then we should feel more comfortable about not treating it. I am not a fan of medication but we just want to do the right thing. I become very frustrated when I feel the doctor just puts you on medication, just because and in reality it is really not necessary. We just keep praying that it will stop soon. In your case had you guys had an family history of seizures? We have no family history at all of anything like this.

I totally agree that you don't want meds unless they are absolutely necessary and luckily for you, it seems BRE is one form of epilepsy they don't treat unless necessary. Hopefully the EEG result will confirm the information you need to make your final decision. So is your doctor saying it is in his/her judgment that your child does not need meds but is willing to put him on them because of the recent reoccurrence of seizures? I read so many posts here with people struggling with the meds. Our child, after about a month, adapted to it. Her dose is tiny but she did feel a little sad the first month and she was a little impulsive but all that subsided. We do have a family history. My husband's brother had some seizures as a child, totally different to our daughter's, and he outgrew them within a year or two. There is a real story of a child outgrowing it!
