benign rolandic epilepsy

Fri, 07/07/2006 - 11:43
My son has been diagnosed with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He is 8 years old. He has only had seizures in his sleep and they have all been within the 1st 20 to 30 minutes of falling asleep. He has only had 6 since Dec. 2003 but within the last 2 1/2 weeks he has had 3. They are pretty scary. They only last less than a minute or so but he drools alot and is unconscious during them. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also we are not on any medications right now because our doctor says this type of epilepsy is not always treated because kids usually grow out of it at adolescents.

Hello I know this post is very old. But I wanted to share my findings with this disorder. My daughter has these seizures when she is dehydrated. And it was recently confirmed when we were at my daughters Christmas program. Her lips were extremely cracked and dry. She had a seizure that same night while she was asleep. So I've made she is always hydrated and we haven't had any episodes since that picture in December 2017. She's 9 years old and had her first seizure at 8 years old. I hope this helps.

Our 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with Benign Occipital Childhood Epilepsy (BOCE). The doctor initially was not sure if it was BOCE or Benign Rolandic (BRE). He intially thought BRE because because her seizures are at night as well and usually begin which her coughing and wanting to throw up. Our doctor also said had he diagnosed her with BRE, he probably would not have treated it. BOCE, like BRE, has a good prognosis-- usually kids outgrow it in 2 years. Our daughter is medicated (a really small dose of Topomax 15 mg) because with BOCE, it can appear in the day. She has been on meds since early March and has done well with them. I know how scary the seizures are. Our daughter has had 3 that I am positive about (started in October) and the main one lasted between 5 to 10 minutes where her eyes were open but she was not there. Unfortunately with BOCE, the seizures can last up to 30 minutes. To this day, when I think about it, my eyes fill with tears from the fear and shock but then I always have to remember that I have to look at our situation as lucky because she should outgrow it. Sometimes, BOCE, which usually onsets at age 5, can change into BRE. As to your son having three in the last 2 and half weeks, make sure your son get normal amounts of sleep. I know in the summer our kids stay up later and don't sleep as much but our epilepsy specialist has told us that lack of sleep can bring these on because it lowers the childs threshold. You don't see a ton of discussion on these two types of epilepsy on this site, especially BOCE. What is so disturbing to me is that some neurologists are not so familiar with BOCE. I have communicated with parents through this site where it seems clear to me it is either BOCE or BRE and the child has not been diagnosed with it. I always look for posts with facts similiar to our situation to make sure the parents are aware of this. Lots of times they are not. I hope this helps.
