benign rolandic epilepsy

My son has been diagnosed with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He is 8 years old. He has only had seizures in his sleep and they have all been within the 1st 20 to 30 minutes of falling asleep. He has only had 6 since Dec. 2003 but within the last 2 1/2 weeks he has had 3. They are pretty scary. They only last less than a minute or so but he drools alot and is unconscious during them. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also we are not on any medications right now because our doctor says this type of epilepsy is not always treated because kids usually grow out of it at adolescents.

Thanks so much for sharing. It helps to find someone else who has similar problems to our. Like you we too think we are lucky compared to others. It just has us really stressed right now because we really do not want to go the medication route if not needed. I just worry though about if he has one and we don't know about it , will it harm him. Like will he choke or something or stop breathing. He drools alot when the seizure occurs. It is definately very scary for us when it happens.

Dealing with seizures in a child can be scary, regardless of whether on meds! Talk to doctor or better yet, ask him/her for nurse to talk to re safety issues. When parents can talk about possible risks, what to do and what not to worry about, can make it a bit easier. Some parents use monitor in the room, or bed monitors can be used if needed. Keeping track of seizures, possible triggers and how child feels during day is very important. Night time seizures can affect how child functions in the day, and this info may affect whether to use meds! Glad you stopped by and hope to see you around my.epilepsy.com! You should definitely talk to your doctor about whether the drooling can cause choking and breathing problems which could harm him. I think it is so important to have a doctor who is willing to take the time to answer your questions because he may be able to alleviate some of your fears. By the way, I believe our doctor mentioned that the seizures in the sleep don't cause any injury to the brain. We also were stressed about the whole medicine issue. I am one of those people who does not even take Advil unless I have a headache that feels like I was kicked in the head by a horse. However, she needed the meds and it has helped. I think I mentioned before that our doc indicated if it was BRE, he would not medicate and if it was BOCE, he would. Obviously the decision to medicate by a doctor is a case by case basis even if two children have the same diagnosis but I believe he indicated for BRE, he would not medicate because you only see the seizures at night. I guess, if the seizures were very frequent, he would have taken that into consideration. Is your doctor suggesting that you start the medicine?
