Epilepsy and Memory Loss

Sun, 10/08/2006 - 19:36
I'm brand new to this forum. Looking it over, I don't see my major problem & don't have much info about it. I have lost alot of my memory & it supposedly is because of seizures. I have been on Neurontin since I had some blackouts, which I guess are called Absence Seizures. I just blank out & my eyes get glassy. I want to know if the memory loss & "feeling weird" are the result of having Epilepsy, or could they be from meds? I also take Effexor XR for depression. I tried to go off that when I thought maybe I'd been mistakenly diagosed with depression before they realized I have Epilepsy. That resulted in some very bad mental & emotional health problems. I'm taking both now, & the memory loss & (sometimes)weird feelings persist. Anyone out there know anything about these issues?

I have memory loss also. I have had epilepsy for 22 years and had the surgery in feb of '05. Short term is what is the hardest for me. I have learned that I have to write everything down.

It is terrible to have memory loss and as an epileptic for close to 14 years now my memory and cognitive function have been deteriorating. However, 2 years ago after feeling terrible with many issues, I'm sure many of you experience, I started studying a lot and exercising my brain. Ever since I started, my memory and speech, use of vocabulary, etc have gotten all the much better and improving to this day. For those of you who have the same problem, I really recommend that you read and study and think now deeply about the materials you are reading. Although the progress is slow in comparison to a non epileptic, but I know the progress exists. My short term memory is still terrible but at least I know it is getting better as time goes by. Hope this suggestion can help those of you who are going through the same experience. Pgy

Katie: Yes, I write everything down too. That also helps me de-stress because then I know I don't have to remember it. I keep my calendar, lists, everything I need to remember to ease my mind. As I told Ivy above, I also am working on anything else that stresses me, because that is what seems to cause my auras or seizures or just plain weird feelings I get. God Bless. Terri N.
