im 19 and got my first seizure when i was about 15...i just found out i may have to take my meds for the rest of my life after having another one about 4 weeks ago while being weaned off of the meds. I would love to hear any comments or advice from anybody who has seizures, especially those caused by sleep deprivation.

Hi there. My name is Brittanee. I just turned 20 nov. 7th of this year. When I was 15 I had two seizures...one in oct. which was a grand mal seizure. I was admitted to the local hospital and given a neurologist who put me on carbatrol. I was on that for 2 years. I didn't take it right so in feb. I had a second seizure. This time it was a petit mal seizure. I realize now that they were both caused from lack of sleep. After taking my meds like I was supposed to for the remainder of the two years..I was given the go ahead to start weaning myself. After I did, June 18th of 07 I had my son who is now 6 months old as of yesterday. I realized after having him and only getting an hour of sleep the first night he came home that when I didn't get sleep my eyes twitched..would have spasms. I go back to the neurologist feb. 5th of 08 ..I'm STILL trying to get my liscence because of the seizures. Anyway, all they could ever tell me was that when they did the brain waves tests that my brain waves were abnormal...and because I had 2 seizures I had epilepsy(they said 2 or more seizures are considered epilepsy or seizures disorder). I haven't had any since but I make sure I get 8 hours of sleep at least a night. Is there anyone who might have some input on my seizures as to what may have caused them etc? I would really appreciate feedback as I have struggled with the confusion over not having an answer for years. My email is Match_Box_2006@yahoo.com Anyone with any info please feel free to email me :) I'd love to hear from people who are or have gone through the same things I have. Thanks so much and I wish you all well. -Britt

I know exactly how you feel juane. I have had my epilepsy since I was 9 yrs old and was not diagnosed until just before my 16th birthday I'm now 24. I was 1st given a combination of carbamazipine and sodium valproate which didn't help, if anything it made my seizures more severe (i suffer tonic-clonic seizures) meaning I was frequently hospitalised. since then after being transferred to a new consultant as my previous one had retired, I have been weaned onto lamotrogine and it has been a blessing. my attacks are now less frequant but I am still affected if I haven't had enough sleep, try to change my sleeping routine for shift patterns at work or if I become physically exhausted I almost instantaniously suffer a seizure and have even suffered one whilst at work, fortunatley my colleagues were really understanding and my boss was really compassionate over it and has since asked if there were any adjustments he could make to help me.

Sleep deprivation on it's own will not cause seizures.  Sleep deprivation of a person who has a seizure disorder or a tendency to have seizures allows the seizures to occur more easily.  All the more reason to get enough sleep on a daily basis.
