Trileptol Side Effects

Tue, 01/23/2007 - 16:37
My name is Lisa and I am 32 years old. I live with Epilepsy and was taking Tegretol when my doctor switched me to Trileptol claiming that this medicine would be better on my body in the long run. I have been taking Trileptol for about a year and I started having dizzy spells with irritability. I told my docter this and he ordered a blood test and it came out normal (so he says). I am very concerned about this and would like to know if anyone else has had these side effects also. -Lisa

Hi Lisa My hubby has been on 1800mg Trileptal when they weaned him off the Dilantin about a yr and half ago. He was on high doses of dilantin which actually was harming his body but the main reason they took him off was because he ended up having a gRand Mal seizure even on the highest dose so it was time to start all over with a new drug. At first he had some side effects like dizzies and fatigue but overall he got use to it and he felt actually his best on that. Hes only been on Dilantin (highest dose) and then they did try Lamictal but he had horrible side efects form the Lamictal like Paraniod thoughts, anxiety and he ended up breaking out with the deadly rash. So out of those three he did the very best. Unfortunately he started having parial focal seizures recently and now hes on the highest dose 2400mg daily to see if it will stop the partial seizures. Hes been on this high dose for 4 days now. Makes him exhausted the first 3 hours after taking 1200 and he acts like hes a bit tipsey like he drank too much. The other side affect you ahve to worry about is that it can cause low sodium in the body. Im sure hubby will be going for blood work in a few weeks when he sees Doc again...and they will do another ambulatory EEG to see if the high dose will help. I just hope and pray he gets use to the side effects other wise its back to square one with the meds. Overall, we like Trileptal....its been good to Hubby. I wish you luck and success with it. -Diane

Hi, I'm new to this site, but I've been on trilepal for 5 years now, 1800mg, 900mg 2xday. I get the vision disturbances once in a while, mostly double vision, but it doesn't last long. It used to make me sleepy after taking it, but over time that has gotten better too. My biggest problem is my memory. I don't know if it's from the epilepsy or the medication. I've learned to laugh at it because I can't change it. Beats the alternative. It drives my husband nuts, our teenage kids think it's funny. Here's the real kicker though...I know I have partial seizures but I also have another kind ... for the life of me can't remember what they are. See what I mean. I do still have the occasional seizure but it's been partials and it's been a year. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Sausha
