Trileptol Side Effects

Tue, 01/23/2007 - 16:37
My name is Lisa and I am 32 years old. I live with Epilepsy and was taking Tegretol when my doctor switched me to Trileptol claiming that this medicine would be better on my body in the long run. I have been taking Trileptol for about a year and I started having dizzy spells with irritability. I told my docter this and he ordered a blood test and it came out normal (so he says). I am very concerned about this and would like to know if anyone else has had these side effects also. -Lisa

Hi Cat, My 9 yr old daughter has been on Trileptal since March 2006. In Nov. she had a complete change in personality and went from a loving, happy girl to aggressive and nasty. Her neuro increased her dosage and waited two months and did an EEG. It still showed some activity so he increased her dosage again. School has been a complete nightmare for her, the teachers and myself. She has outbursts and you never know what will set her off. We go to the neuro next week again and he said we will discuss changing her medicine. Its getting to the point that they want to place her in another school in a self contained classroom. I just hope it is all from the Trileptal and we can get her on something else that will help her. Very stressful getting calls from the principal a few times a week. Thanks for the info on trileptal, at least I know I'm not alone. Shar

Hi Shar... I hope that everything goes Ok for your daughter. I appreciate the neuro might have thought an increase in dose might have helped and offered stability. Sometimes though neuros don't know it all, and the results of their handiwork can be less than the cure prescribed. They don't realize what is important to us, or our families. Especially to mom's who do have kids with epilepsy and do care and worry. Seems to be a case of ' business as usual, and let's just get on with it, and go out to lunch...' Meds are great when the dose is at a level that enables stability and life to be participated in fully. Plenty of times in the past I read accounts of this med by two people at the time reportedly taking this med.... They sure were exhibiting really freaky behaviour... The slightest thing said about it seemed to set them off, and make them prone to outbursts. One of them admitted to a personality change that had them not recognizing themselves when they posted.... Was a real nightmare experience to go thru.... Some changes are for the better, some not. What has to be remembered, and has been already discussed in this thread... Meds can and do vary in person to person in the impact they have. I hope your daughter finds stability that is needed right now. Hang in there, and stay positive and upbeat. It helps, as does knowing that people do care, and try and understand... Keep us updated... Cat. "Many false prophets are gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

Thanks Cat, I guess no one really knows and I'm seeing more and more that what works for one may not for another. We went to the neuro today and he is starting her on a low dosage of lamictal along with the trileptal and then when we go back next month he will increase the lamictal and decrease the trileptal. He does feel the trileptal is giving her the behavior problems. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the words of encouragement! I will update after she is on the lamictal for a week or so. Take care, Shar
