Topamax hallucinations

Wed, 06/01/2005 - 23:49
My son was just changed from Depakote to Topamax and we are still stirating up to his max dosage; we are in week 4. I researched the med when prescribed and didn't like what I saw, but since side effects MIGHT not happen with him and he was so upset with the depakote (hair loss, he's 15), I thought we'd try.I didn't let him read the list of side effects so he would not be influenced. He is seeing lines connecting everything together; he describes it as a special effects, like in a movie or photo when the film is rushed together. Is this something normal for this med or to be reported to the DR?Will it go away?(can you tell I'm new here ? :-) thanks for your help......)

I must say I am sick and tired of the folks that claim specfic meds are "wicked", "horrible", "scary", etc. If these meds were so bad they would not be on the market. LEt's remember, drugs that require a prescription require one because deciding who should use what and for what duration and at what dose is not an easy task and requires the prescriber to have a keen understanding of the condition being treated and the drug itself.

Why do people insist on scaring the bageebee's out of people?

When I read all the topamax issues from the orginal post (spiders, lines converging, blurriness) my first thought was 1) tell your doctor and consider seeing an othamalogist. Afterall, topamax can effect the eyes.

INstead of telling horror stories, how about giving productive advice?

My son is on topamax - it has not been "wicked". YEs, we had some issues with finding the right dose - too high, seizures were controlled, apetite dropped, but word finding was very difficult and he would get agitated. Dose too low, we had break through seizures and some explosive behavior.  All of this medication stuff is a dance, an art, not a science. Every body is different...everybody.

Excuse me!!!!! When someone ask about a drug and i have info onit. I'm going to tell the truth good or bad. I never want to scare anyone But, I'm going to tell them my experiance with it. I'm not going to sugar coat any side effect. I hate when people don't tell the truth and try to sugar coat things. Yes, we all have diffferent reactions on drugs. But, when someone ask, I'm going to post good or bad. I'm glad it's working for you But it was horrible for my son. That's just my opinion... Sorry if I effended anyone.

Blessings,

Kristi

Hi, My 16 y/o ddaughter went through a type of hell on earth from lamictal. It's not being negative or over dramatic, but just honest. She got rash all over body including painful sores in mouth, eyes and rectum. Her lymph glands swelled and neck was stiff and sore, then down her back. She developed fever which went up to 105 at one point for 3 days. In and out of emergency room 3 times on two weeks. UGH!! I think many people get this in one version or another from aeds - more than manufacturers want us to know... And, as a mom, I must admit... it IS scary! She was changed to zonegran which also caused rash which still appears on and off after a month,...dilantin...rash...now so far so good with the Lord and after much prayer... on keppra. I am now confessing she's healed by Jesus stripes no matter what disease or medicine side effects attack her! My faith is in the lord!W. Lewis
