Topamax hallucinations

Wed, 06/01/2005 - 23:49
My son was just changed from Depakote to Topamax and we are still stirating up to his max dosage; we are in week 4. I researched the med when prescribed and didn't like what I saw, but since side effects MIGHT not happen with him and he was so upset with the depakote (hair loss, he's 15), I thought we'd try.I didn't let him read the list of side effects so he would not be influenced. He is seeing lines connecting everything together; he describes it as a special effects, like in a movie or photo when the film is rushed together. Is this something normal for this med or to be reported to the DR?Will it go away?(can you tell I'm new here ? :-) thanks for your help......)

I've been on Topamax multiple times, and each time I've quit taking it because the side effects are too much for me to handle. I'm an 18 year old female, and I've found that it ruins my ability to think straight, which made it hard to do schoolwork. I did lose a lot of weight on it, though, which was a very pleasant side effect.

The most recent time I was put on it though, I had taken to smoking pot for my migraines, especially at night, before I would go to sleep.. which also happens to be when I would take my daily meds, including the Topamax. So I took my meds, then smoked a bowl hoping to get some relief from my pain and sleep that night. That was when I started to feel a little iffy. My brain felt like it was shutting down and I started getting crazy head-rushes, even though I was sitting in bed. I laid down, hoping that it would go away, and that's when I started to shake and feel ripples going through my body. I was hearing voices and seeing colors and auras that weren't there.. and my eyes wouldn't stop twitching back and forth. I looked up the drug interaction on google after the fact and apparently people do that combination on purpose to 'trip out'. I thought I should warn anyone I can, since I had no idea that I should have taken caution with smoking.

I'm back on the Topamax, 100 mg twice a day, and I've given up the pot because I'm terrified of the interaction I experienced before. But last night I woke up in the middle of the night with tactile hallucinations. I've looked up drug interactions with all the other meds I've taken and nothing says hallucinations, but it is a side effect of the topamax. I need to talk to my doctor
