Side effects of Lamictal

Thu, 08/11/2005 - 20:15
I was wondering if anyone has heard of anyone on Lamictal getting Hypoglycemia or having the effects of Hypoglycemia?A couple of times since I been on this medication, I felt dizzy and was wondering if this is a side effect of the medication or if I did have low blood sugar cause of maybe too much medication. I had to start eating every two hours.I am on Lamictal, 250 mg, and Tegertol, 200 mg twice a day. I have to cut one pill in half. I been on this medication for about 3 months now, was on Dilantin with other meds. Erik

Giddiness is a not uncommon side-effect of Lamictal/Lamotrigine.  When I was taking 400mg Lamot I myself often felt giddy, especially in the late afternoon, if I was tired.  The only problem I seem to have with the 200mg I take now is the effect it has on my ability to sleep properly.

One thing I noticed when the Lamot was causing me giddiness was that the latter was almost always 'triggered' by my turning my head round, for whatever reason.  Perhaps a nerve in the neck gets trapped, or similar.  I found that turning the whole body round, rather than the head only, prevented this happening.  You might try it.

Thanks all, I didn't make the connection between feeling sleepy/weak-eating-and my lamictal. I have felt sleepy etc. but just chalked it up to heat and a side effect...I'll try eating more regularly and see if that helps me feel better...Toni

I have had the same problem since taking lamictal, and my doctor says that there is an effect on blood sugar and anticonvulsant levels.  I try to make sure to eat at least every three hours, or I get jittery.  I've never passed out, but sometimes I get so hungry that I end up eating too much junk food.
