Lamictal, memory loss and getting memory back

Sun, 12/14/2014 - 23:42

Hi,

I have been on Lamictal 300mg for about 4 years. My loss of memory and inability to pull out words has gotten to the point where I'm not enjoying life. Holding a conversation that lasts a few sentences has become embarassing. I was wondering if anyone who has been on lamictal and taken off has had their memory return. I will talk to my doctor but the last time I went in they tried to convince me that the meds had nothing to do with memory loss.

Thanks,

Donna

I'm on 200mg a day of Lamotrigine to control my absence seizures. I came across this forum by googling memory loss and lamotrigine. I have just returned from the dentists where I got into an argument with the receptionist. I  turned up for an appointment that had been cancelled two weeks ago. I had absolutely no recollection of this even though she had logged a call to let me know. Only when I got home and checked my phone did I realise she was right. I immediately called and apologised. I have been struggling with short term memory loss for a while now. I have always had trouble remembering people's names. My partner has got used to this. When we are walking in the street and she sees someone coming that we know she tells me their name and where we know them from so I am not embarrassed if they should stop and speak to us. If I am walking alone I try not to catch people's eye because I have no idea if I even know them until they say hello. It used to be kind of amusing. One of my funny traits. But it has gone beyond a joke now. I have to treble check everything at work as I am a linesman and one mistake could get someone killed. If it gets any worse I am going to have to seek a new career. It is getting me really down. I am making an appointment with my neurologist to see if I can cut down or change my medication or just to see if there is any light on the horizon. Another thing. I notice there are a lot of people on here commenting that they cry about it a lot. Has anyone else noticed a hightening of emotions? I struggle not to cry at the slightest thing lately. Even movies and programmes that are not meant to be sad. Even the news has me in tears sometimes. It's embarrassing and I usually have to turn my head away so nobody can see. Is this part of the same problem or am I just getting soft in my old age? Thanks everybody for posting. Great to feel that I am not alone in this.

The community forum has the word "getting memory back" I don't see ANYTHING in here that has to do with getting memory back. Is that true? Can you get your memory back? Some of it? How? Please explain if you know anything about that.
