keppra and behavior problems

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 08:08
Our 10 yr old son is on 1 tsp of keppra 2 X a day. We have been having problems with his behavior and attitude. I am not sure if it is from the meds. Has anyone else had problems like that. He is hard to get up in the morning, and not cooperative. But does not seem sleepy during the day or evening. If it is from the meds will it pass after a certain amount of time?

Wow am I glad I found this, because I'm pulling my hair out!! My daughter has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, with additional brain damage caused by Infantile Spasms as a baby. She is taking Lamotrigine, which I thought was causing some behavioural issues, and has now been on Keppra for a week. Apart from the fact that the liquid tastes like turpentine, she's become increasingly aggressive, tearful, erratic, and our household is a very unhappy place at the moment, with me losing my temper at her constantly challenging behaviour. It has to be the medication. HOwever, seeing that everybody is giving it a period of time before giving up, I'll carry on, although I'm not sure one of us will be alive by the end of it! Being a single mum, it's just me that has to cope with this and it's making me sad and depressed. I do wonder if, because she wasn't totally happy on the Lamotrigine by itself, whether the effects are even more exacerbated?

Hi Alison1963, I know how you feel. I am going thru the same problems with my 9yo daughter. We are in the process of switching my daughter from trileptal to keppra. She starts getting weaned off the trileptal next week but i believe being on the two right now is definitely making her worse. Her neuro does not want to do anything different until she is on the keppra alone because he cant judge with her still on both. the trileptal caused her behavior issues and wasnt controlling her complex partials. I have to say, she has not had one since starting the keppra. Its a tough, stressful road but hang in there and feel free to write. I'm keeping Loreal in business with all the grays popping up. Take Care! shar
