keppra and behavior problems

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 08:08
Our 10 yr old son is on 1 tsp of keppra 2 X a day. We have been having problems with his behavior and attitude. I am not sure if it is from the meds. Has anyone else had problems like that. He is hard to get up in the morning, and not cooperative. But does not seem sleepy during the day or evening. If it is from the meds will it pass after a certain amount of time?

I have not tried the B6 with my son yet. He has an appt. in a couple weeks, I will talk with her then. We had another blow up today. He is attitude stinks and then he just shuts down. And to make it worse, today I blew up.. Screaming and saying am I a bad mom? Why do act like this to me! I apologized later. I just feel some days like I can't take this attitude and behavior from him. He used to be a little like this but now it is a million times worse. I am looking forward to talking to the Dr. about all this. Hang in there, I hope things get better with your son. J

Hi there, Sorry to hear about your problems. I'd say the behavioral problems that do occur when starting on Keppra seem to be accentuated the younger the patient is. First of all they are confused ,frightened and angry about having Epilepsy and secondly they are at an age where tempers can flare far more easily. I know it's easy for me to sat this with hindsight, I've been on keppra, epilim and clobazam for 3 years and even though I'm supposedly a mature grown up the mood swings and general all round bad attitude kicked in but they eventually calmed down pretty soon, although I'd say it would take a bit longer the younger the patient. Looking back it was well worth it as I have been seizure free for 3 years. Keppra is usually taken in conjunction with other meds to take the edge of some of those side effects. The other thing that helped me through was having good psychiatric care having someone to let it all out to really helped and stopped me taking things out on those I loved. I know our circumstances are very different but I hope some of this helps you. I hope things work out for both your son and you. Good luck Andy.
