keppra and behavior problems

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 08:08
Our 10 yr old son is on 1 tsp of keppra 2 X a day. We have been having problems with his behavior and attitude. I am not sure if it is from the meds. Has anyone else had problems like that. He is hard to get up in the morning, and not cooperative. But does not seem sleepy during the day or evening. If it is from the meds will it pass after a certain amount of time?

Hello, Not sure if your son is still on keppra or not. I just found this web site and saw your letter. My son has been on keppra for over 2 yrs., he is now 4 yrs old. He too has aggression issues. I added vit. b6 and that does seem to improve his behavior. Ryan though is up to 6 ml 2x day. We tried to add trileptal. That just increased his seizures, so we stopped. My son also has developmental delays. It has been a long 2 yrs. Ryan is now going into his 2nd year of specialized pre- school w/ pt,ot and speech therapy. Ryan also wakes up crying in the middle of the night. Hope things have settled down for your son, and is doing well.

Yes, he is still on the Keppra but is doing much better. He has been struggling a little with school. He is in the 5th grade. I am not sure what made the differance maybe he had to adjust to the medicine? Hope your son will soon be doing better. It would be hard with one so little. Hang in there. J

I have been taking the pills for Keppra for over 6 years, in dosages of 1500mg in morning and 1500mg at night. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4 and I had my first siezure at age 11, now I am in my sophmore year of college. I take 3 different types of antiseizure medications, lyrica, keppra, and zonegran, and I have been with keppra the longest; so with the behavior problem I cant say anything for you because I have ADHD, but if the behavioral problem is mostly pertaining to very little cooperation in the morning and it is extremely hard to get him up in the morning, that would be the medication, one of the side effects for keppra is drowsiness but keppra is a very powerful drug and it works in the way that when your body is tired the drug has a more powerful effect, what I did to help induce more cooperation in the morning was I told my doctor the problem and asked if he could give me half the dosage in the evening, so for you half a teaspoon in the night, but before doing that, try giving your son the medication about an hour or two before usual but make sure to ask his doctor. Now it is not labeled on many medications but almost every anticonvulsant medication has the effect of causing major mood disorders also due to the fact that many anticonvulsant medications are used anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders, the attitude problem with your son will most likely pass over. When your body is put on a medication for something relating to the neurological part of the body, it needs time to adjust I would say give it about 6 weeks but everyone is different and it might take longer for your son. In the near future if you start to see signs of your son isolating himself from others, not want to play with his friends and especially if he starts to snap at you for certain things I would recommend seeing his doctor because it is the medication and you dont want to wait to long.
