keppra and behavior problems

Thu, 02/16/2006 - 08:08
Our 10 yr old son is on 1 tsp of keppra 2 X a day. We have been having problems with his behavior and attitude. I am not sure if it is from the meds. Has anyone else had problems like that. He is hard to get up in the morning, and not cooperative. But does not seem sleepy during the day or evening. If it is from the meds will it pass after a certain amount of time?

I had a hard time with Keppra. From the 2nd day I was on it I felt like I had a short fused temper. I found myself getting angry at the most insane things - REALLY angry. The sleepiness was managable because compared to other medications it seemed to be a bit less. Finding the right medication is a trial and error process. It's hard to find one med that "fits" with your body, but when you find it you KNOW it. Since he's only been on Keppra for a short period of time I would give it a couple more weeks. (My personal rule = 6wks after full dosage) Good luck!

Boy am I glad I found this site. My 2yo son has recently been diagnosed with seizures and has been on Keppra for a couple weeks now. We just jumped from 200mg twice/day to 300mg twice/day and he's begun to have lots of aggressive, irritable periods where he'll just cry or act out and start banging his head on things. It is also disturbing his sleep. He wakes crying in the middle of the night in distress like he must feel weird and just can't settle his poor little self down. I should mention that my sone also has significant developmental delays and is non-verbal and doesn't walk yet. It is very frustrating to not be able to tell what is wrong and know how to help him. He's gone from being a sweet, funny little guy to being a whiny ALL the time and just seeming to be really out of sorts. Has anyone had significant luck with the B6 addition? I may try it since it sounds like we really should wait a few more weeks to see if the behavior sort of settles before we talk to the docs about changing meds. Would appreciate any advice/wisdom---especially from parents of little ones. Thanks!
