Weight and seizures

Can anyone tell me that if losing weight can help a person from having a lot of seizures? ...or is that just wishful thinking on my part???? :-) I'm slightly overweight and thought to do more exercises and start eating healthy again. When I'm stressed a lot I usually go for the food which is pretty bad to do so I'm going to try to kick the habit.....wish me luck!

Hi! While losing weight itself is not a known trigger to seizures, it can help as people said - more exercise, healthier eating, more regular eating habits, improved mood etc etc. A word of caution - people who are going on diet should talk to their neurologist and let them know. DON"T take any diet pills or at least don't do it until clear with neurologist, as many may increase seizures. Check the nutritional and herbal supplements too that say they help lose weight - there can be seizure triggering substances in them. And, see the neurologist to have med levels checked - as people lose weight, the amount of medicine they require will change. If this isn't adjusted, people can get side effects of being overmedicated. Good luck and be healthy! Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist

Jeanne5131 Weight issues are always a problem for me because I have some memory issues also and if I'm hungry I eat. What I've dome to help with this is join weight watchers. Their program where "if you bite it write it" expects me to keep a record of my daily diet and it is healthy but not extreme. My doctor even said it was a good way to stay healthy and hold your weight steady but not endanger you medicine balance. Many meds I tried caused me to really gain so this worked great. You don't have to join weight watchers, just keep a record of what you eat. It really helps you remember how much and exactly what you eat. Good Luck! and

Hi there, In virtually every community no matter how small there will always be a couple of weight watchers groups that will be there for you because the people in these groups all have the same problem as you, they find it hard to lose the weight by themselves and by doing it as a group they are all helping and supporting each other and bringing new ideas to the table and making new friends. To be honest you don't sound particularly overweight going by your height and weight but I know what you mean when you say its how you feel. My sister and niece were the same and they joined the local village weight watchers and both of them lost almost 25lbs each over a reasonable length of time by eating healthily doing a bit more exercising, only walking to work instead of getting in the car etc. But the main thing was they got support from and gave support to everyone else in the group and that gave them that little bit of extra will power because they would be saying it's not just myself i let down if i have that pizza its all of us. She even asked about someone with E joining and was told it was not a problem as long as they were made aware because there was a trained first-aider there anyway. They also said meds shouldn,t be a problem because it's not like a crash diet or taking pills or excessive exercise, it's about controlled weight loss over a period of time through healthy eating and support from like-minded people in a friendly atmosphere. i hope some of this helps.
