If you cant be nice than dont say anything at all

I came across a post that was all about someones fears and the fact that they are having a hard time with what they are going thru. In one of the responses they got it came across as what I felt was a very mean and uncaring response. I think that this forum is a way for people to express there feelings and thoughts the good the bad and the ugly. I would hate to think that in responding to these thoughts that we as a group would be or try to be understanding and supportive. If we cant be nice than we shouldnt respond at all no one needs there feelings to be dismissed or made to feel invalid or that they dont count. I think we all need to remember that we need to treat others the way we would like to be treated no more or no less. Because we never know how one kind word might make someones world a little better, or one nasty word might make there world crumble around them. I think that we should remember what we learned as childeren "play nice or dont play at all"

Hi Gretchen, I'm glad you told about that. I'm also a Muslim and I'm also having epilepsy. In my country almost all of them are Muslims. I'm Muslim but I'm not a murderer or terrorist, I'm just like you. I'm very dissapointed when the fist time I diagnosed as epilepsy and until now I'm so emotionally when heard negative perceptions about that disease in the public. I think the difference not because the religion but it depends on their minds. In my country, that's many types of them, somekind of them are dislike the "west"culture but somekind of them are totally 'copy' that "west" culture. I'm just SILENT if people says about religion, culture or my disease, I don't want to hurt them because that's very hurt to me after heard their perceptions about my seizure. I am agree with Pam's 'just like the kid, play nice or don't play at all.I'm glad to know this sites because I can found much friend who has had same troubles just like me. Well Gretchen, do you want me to be your other Muslim's friend?

Hi arlin, and welcome. I'm sorry you feel as you do and hope that your trips here give you the knowledge you seek that will enable you to feel better about the way culture and epilepsy is seen. People can be cruel, and not understand what matters to another person regarding cultural differences within the world. What matters most is trying to see other points of view, along with listening to that viewpoint. Vital to do so to see, and gain understanding in a way that lessens the hurt caused by negativity that can exist in the world, or within a cultural diverse group. If doing that eases the pain felt, then all the better. Negative perception does still exist, but the barriers are being broken down thankfully. People are more willing to discuss their concerns over all aspects of their treatment publicly now than in the past. Silence then did have a part to play in why that was. Have you looked at any of the links on this site yet. There is plenty of good information if you do that gives perception into what causes seizures. Also there are personal stories of people who have written about their viewpoint-just as you have. They are very interesting and should interest you. They have allowed us to step into their minds and have shared with us, as you have how they felt. Please keep us updated on your progress won't you. Stay positive and upbeat- it helps. Cat. ...Gretchen has typed this while being postictal. I am sure no one considers this to be funny or is happy that she suffers with being postictal. If one of her friends have not already, you may want to email her to make sure she is ok and don't be surprised if the response is also posticatal or half swedish. Consider it as a lesson in learning another language. Keep emailing her until the responses you get are ok.
