Deja vu

Tue, 04/05/2005 - 08:00

Hi, my name is Lisa and this is my first time posting.  I am 39 years and a mother of two daughters.  About 18 months ago, I had two experiences of deja vu.  After the deju vu feeling passed, I had a strange feeling in my stomach (like being on a rollercoaster).  These deja vu experiences were about a week apart and I believe only lasted a second or two.  About two weeks after these deja vu experiences and had a "doom" feeling.  I was in the bathroom and this intense feeling of dread happenned followed by that strange feeling in my stomach.  After these incidents I feel very "foggy" and tired.  I called my family practioner and he ordered an MRI which was "normal" and showed no lesions.  He asked if I wanted to see a neurologist but I declined because I thought it would never happen again.  Well it did--last Friday I had two more episodes of Deja Vu, once when I was laying in  bed and again about an hour later.  I know they were deja vu and at the time intense, however I cannot remember what the particular dream sequence was.  I called my family practioner and he has referred me to a neurolgist that specializes in seizure disorders.  I cannot get into the neurologist until late May? Am I on the right track here?  should I request certain tests?  does an EEG only show irregularities while having a seizure?  Also, I am afraid to drive in case one of these episodes occur.  Thanks!

Interesting you say that,

Interesting you say that, because I am taking Fluoxetine for panic disorder and and generalized anxiety disorder.  I have been taking it for 10 years.  I asked my psychiatrist about it, though, and she seems to think (now) it is seizures.  I experienced my first one around 8 years ago and have since only had 6 episodes (3 unfortunately in one day, then one this morning).  They're hideous!  I get a strange since of deja vue then become very nauseated and then smell and taste food.  My back and body feel like they have been lit on fire and I feel like I am going to poop my pants.  I don't black out, but do feel as though I am dopey afterwards and very sleepy.  My psychiatrist prescribed Xanax when they first started because she originally thought they were panic attacks.  But my panic attacks feel completely different.  Fortunately, she said recently, that if they are seizures that the Xanax will also help with those.  When I woke up this morning and had a deja vue episode, I immediately got up and took a Xanax.  It worked!!! :) I am still going to make an appointment with a neurologist to be on the safe side and to find a better treatment plan if I am having seizures.  But reading these comments have made me feel less crazy and more hopeful that an answer to this issue will be found.  I hate to know others are suffering with this but it is good to know I am not alone.

I have the same, Paul. You

I have the same, Paul. You get a few seconds' notice and then it hits you.. Complete disorientation and a horrible feeling in the stomach. I've had it for around 3 years, and it can be a couple of times a week or once a fortnightly. No pattern to it. Some 'episodes' last longer than others, and as feel I am 'coming back' I run through the names of family members and of our cats, - it sometimes takes a little while to realise I am back in the land of the living and not in the isolated dreamworld it feels like. After that it's a real need to sleep and after a few hours wake up like I have been rebooted. I don't drink and I don't drive. I have had bipolar for the last 12 years or so and on regular meds, so wonder why this happens...
