Deja vu

Tue, 04/05/2005 - 08:00

Hi, my name is Lisa and this is my first time posting.  I am 39 years and a mother of two daughters.  About 18 months ago, I had two experiences of deja vu.  After the deju vu feeling passed, I had a strange feeling in my stomach (like being on a rollercoaster).  These deja vu experiences were about a week apart and I believe only lasted a second or two.  About two weeks after these deja vu experiences and had a "doom" feeling.  I was in the bathroom and this intense feeling of dread happenned followed by that strange feeling in my stomach.  After these incidents I feel very "foggy" and tired.  I called my family practioner and he ordered an MRI which was "normal" and showed no lesions.  He asked if I wanted to see a neurologist but I declined because I thought it would never happen again.  Well it did--last Friday I had two more episodes of Deja Vu, once when I was laying in  bed and again about an hour later.  I know they were deja vu and at the time intense, however I cannot remember what the particular dream sequence was.  I called my family practioner and he has referred me to a neurolgist that specializes in seizure disorders.  I cannot get into the neurologist until late May? Am I on the right track here?  should I request certain tests?  does an EEG only show irregularities while having a seizure?  Also, I am afraid to drive in case one of these episodes occur.  Thanks!

Im so glad to find this..In 1985-86 when I was at work one day I had recurring deja vu occurences over and over all day..It was so wierd and then I would get the "rollercoaster feeling" in my stomach..it went on for two days but I never told anyone then about it.. about 10 years later it happens again..Im in the shower getting ready for work...still never looked into it.. Last night i felt really weird and just crappy..my head was all messed up like my equilibrium was off..Then this morning i started having the deja vu thing and getting that sick feeling..I was telling a lady at work about it and she thinks its nerves..when I pulled this up and read that it is EXACTLY my symptoms I felt relieved..Im so glad that you put the stomach rollercoaster feeling..thats it 100%. So now what? If it only happens every 10 years is worth worrying about...It is so so strange..

It is a few months since you wrote your post, Alex M. Thanks for giving some detail about what you experienced with your deja vu and your feeling or, I should say, knowledge that you have had dreams about it. That was the same for me back in 1994 a few months after I moved to Thailand to start a new life. We were buiding a guesthouse to live in, and for a business, and one day I was in the back garden and realised that everything I was looking at, everything, was exactly the same as in a bad nightmarish but incredibly vivid dream I had had in Bangkok just a day or so after arriving. I had been staying at an inlaw's house there and sleeping during the heat of the day and woke up in a sweat. (I suspect that our brain makes us have bad dreams in these situations so that we do wake up and take steps to cool ourselves down.) Anyway, a few months later, in the garden, I realised that what I was experiencing was deja vu and the very idea that such a thing could be possible, well, it made me pass out. (How can you dream something that will, in the future, be there in very detailed reality? It goes against every notion of physics, and chemistry and life, doesn't it?) At least that's the way I thought of it at the time. One of the builders noticed, a minute or so later, that I was lying on the ground and they came to help me... The rest is unimportant and routine (off to hospital, scans etc's etc/ yes, even in Thailand they have such sophisticated equipment) and I was diagnosed with petit mal or what this site might call partial seizures, and I have been taking dilantin ever since. I was told that "adult onset epilepsy" is what I have... Only about once or twice a month do I get "that funny feeling" that something is going to happen before my visual field starts to go funny and the deja vu feeling starts again, but I control it by changing my location, and I never pass out. I recover quite quickly. I was interested to see somewhere in these pages that someone noticed that it they had blood thinning medicine, they had less, or no, seizures. Since I suspect that I might be dehydrated sometimes and as it follows that if you are dehydrated, your blood might become thicker than it should be, that really is interesting. It is wonderful to find this site. Why didn't I look this up years ago?! I was trying to find out something about the alternatives to dilantin because I have noticed that my gums are changing ( the gingivitis caused by one of the common side effects?) and I always have tremors in my left hand and sometimes in my right if I am under stress. The left hand problem has always been with me: the result of childhood brain trauma - hit by car as pedestrian/ in coma 8 days/serious operation on skull/lucky to have survived without other injuries - but sometimes the shaking seems worse (maybe side-effect from dilantin?). In my research today into other anti-seizure drugs, it seems that all of them have tremor and drowsiness as common side-effects, so maybe I will have to stick with dilantin. BooHoo! You have a good name, by the way.... All the best wishes to you, AlexOv

I also had these spells when I was in high school the exact symptoms Alex has.  I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was a small child, but have been controlled without medication since 5th grade.  These Deja vu spells where very different than the petie mal seizers I had as a child.  The last full spell I had was my senior year in high school.  I had many spells that week, so my mom kept me home from school.  I remember getting one in the shower before I went to bed and then before I went to sleep.  The next morning my sister found me unconcious and could not revive me.  My dad called 911 and they to could not get me to come to.  I remember comming to in the ambulance for a minute and then I was out again, and finally was completely alert in the hospital.  After that last incident, I had many tests done and most showed nothing.  I just let it go after that because I never had another one until I was pregnant with my son, I started to feel these spells come on, but I would never get a full deja vu spell again.

I thought this was all in my past until about a month ago my 12 year old son explained my spells to me excactly like I use to have them.  He told me he has been having these spells for awhile now.  I stopped dead in my tracks, because he was the first person to ever explain what I was going through as a teenager.  Now after reading the messeges on this site, I realize I was not and he is not alone.  I am getting very concerned about him because he now throws up after each spell.  He has already had a sleep deprevation EEG, but didn't give us any answers.

My son has been seeing a Pediatric Nerologist for a year now.  Not for the spells (those have just started), but for an unspecified muscle disorder.  It has been a very hectic year and still no answers of what is wrong, just new symptoms.  My 12 year old son has elevated CPK (deals with skeletal muscles); ALT, AST (liver and skeletal muscles); cholestorol, triglicerides, Tsh (tyroid), and low levels of IgG and IgA (immuniglobins), and now this.  He also had a muscle biopsy that stated he has an unspacific myopathy.  I think it is all conected somehow.  I think his other symptoms he has, the spells, and his bloodwork is leading to a metobolic disorder, and I also feel this is genetic.  His next step is to see a pediatric endrocornologist along with his neorologist.

I also think these spells have to do with hormones, because mine began during puberty and then again when I was pregnant, and now my son is ready for puberty and his hormone TSH levels are high.  (I don't know it is just a thought).

If anyone has any information on his issue, please let me know. I am on a quest to find out what is wrong with my son, so any information could help.  I will keep you posted.   JennyAnn
