Deja vu

Tue, 04/05/2005 - 08:00

Hi, my name is Lisa and this is my first time posting.  I am 39 years and a mother of two daughters.  About 18 months ago, I had two experiences of deja vu.  After the deju vu feeling passed, I had a strange feeling in my stomach (like being on a rollercoaster).  These deja vu experiences were about a week apart and I believe only lasted a second or two.  About two weeks after these deja vu experiences and had a "doom" feeling.  I was in the bathroom and this intense feeling of dread happenned followed by that strange feeling in my stomach.  After these incidents I feel very "foggy" and tired.  I called my family practioner and he ordered an MRI which was "normal" and showed no lesions.  He asked if I wanted to see a neurologist but I declined because I thought it would never happen again.  Well it did--last Friday I had two more episodes of Deja Vu, once when I was laying in  bed and again about an hour later.  I know they were deja vu and at the time intense, however I cannot remember what the particular dream sequence was.  I called my family practioner and he has referred me to a neurolgist that specializes in seizure disorders.  I cannot get into the neurologist until late May? Am I on the right track here?  should I request certain tests?  does an EEG only show irregularities while having a seizure?  Also, I am afraid to drive in case one of these episodes occur.  Thanks!

Looks like these are all old comments.  I am 62 years old and first started having the deja vu symptoms about 20 years ago.  When they first started, I also smelled a burning smell at the same time.  The symptoms went away completely but have recurred since the beginning of the year.  Now there is no burning smell.  As some of the posts have commented, the feeling is not really unpleasant.  I don't have a feeling of doom or rollercoasting or any of the other symptoms mentioned.  I hate the thought of going through tests, which may or may not show anything.  I have worried about a brain tumor as many others apparently have.  I have at least 3 or 4 a week but have not had any today.  There is a history of grand mal seizures in my mother's side of the family.

Terry, do you still get the deja vu thing happenning?  do you take medication?  I am frustrated because it is taking so long to get into see the neurologist.

Thanks for your story.  Lisa

Lisa - That's how mine all began when I was younger. I would constanly think - I've been here before- but I couldn't have been... then I started seeing really weird things -visions of things that you would  only see on TV or in a movie but they seemed SO REAL. Whenever I tried telling anyone they thought I was being overdramatic until I started getting worse and they had to pay attention (I threw something at them while grumbling- and don't remember it).

I found out it was all partial seizures the whole time and the de ja vu was my aura - I wasn't crazy. Thank goodness - I thought they were gonna lock me up! I guess I'm telling you this so that you know you are not alone. I went through the tests too as most of us have - alot of mine came up negative then some came up positive... it just depends on when the brain decides to "act out" for the machine. Machines aren't perfect and aren't going to give us all the answers so just trust yourself and tell your doctor everything you can about what happens and when it happens. Thats the best way they can figure it all out - from you - without you they have nothing.

GOOD LUCK!

JoAnne
