I need your help! Seizures and Driving in Michigan

Sat, 03/24/2007 - 17:20
Ok. I need some help and advice. Last week I had a seizure for the first time. I an almost 100% positive i do not have epilepsy, and that the seizure was simply a result of too much caffeine and not enough sleep. However, my doctor still says that i may not drive for 6 months, since that is what Michigan (thats where i live) law says. So basically, i am wondering if anyone knows if there is a way that i can test whether or not i have epilepsy, and if not, is there anything i can do to get my license back without having to wait 6 months??? Any help on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!!

I am 20 years old, and I

I am 20 years old, and I have been having "episodes" since I was 13. Doctors could never tell me what was wrong because none of the tests would prove anything.

Just last week I had a 24 EEG. They connect many electrodes to your head with sticky glue, and hook it up to a mini machine that monitors you for a full 24 hours. Whenever you feel any type of symptom you hit a button on the machine, and it will automatically send a "red flag" to your doctor, so they can specifically look at that time to see if there was any sezuire activity. They also look at the whole day though.

That was the only test that proved anything. I had every test done, expect a spinal tap.. thank God! But really the 24 hour EEG will more than likely tell you something.

Since it sounds like you havent had too many seizures I dont think you have epilposy. I believe if you have it, you would have more frequent seizures. You probably just have a seizure disorder if anything. (its less severe than epilopsy.)

As for the driving, I couldnt drive for 6 months, but I as bad as it sounds, if you dont report it, and neither does your doctor.... well you get the picture.

I have lived in michigan as well most my life.  However, what the doctor said is "he would like you to."  They do not take your licence away, nor do any of the doctors turn your name in.  Michigan does things a little differently.  It does say by state law you "should" not drive for 6 months unless otherwise instructed by a doctor.  However, after you have tests done to prove what caused it i wouldn't worry about it.  Most people will have A seizure, just one, in their lifetime.  Just take sometime to get some tests done, and time to recover and see how it goes.  Make sure to fall asleep at the same time everyday, do not drink caffeine or items high in sugar.  No ciggerettes nor alcohol.  Try to eat as well as possible and exercise moderately as this will help promote healthier CNS function.
