how do i get on with my life?

Wed, 05/25/2005 - 18:47
I'm 22 years old and I had my first seizure at the age of 10.  I had about 4 seizures from the time I was 10 until I was 12.  It took me forever it seems like to get over the fear of seizures.  For a while, I would go out.  All I wanted to do was sit at home.  I knew I had to fight it and get on with my life.  It took a long time for me to become myself again and about the time I was finally back to normal I had another seizure.  I couldn't believe.  I was seizure free for 10 years!  Now I'm back to where I was before.  I'm miserable.  All I ever think about is "wonder if I'll have another seizure."  Also, any uncontrollable movement on my body freaks me out wheter it's my eye twitching or whatever else.  My boyfriend is a very outgoing person but I'm not because of my seizures.  I don't know how to get my life back.  All I do is worry about it.  It's driving my crazy and making so depressed!  I know I haven't had alot of seizures in my life but they have competely turned my life around.  Please give me some advice on how to get my life back to normal.  Thanks

LIVING WITH EPILEPSY-LIFESTYLE TIPS Remeber that epilepsy is just part of your life.-Educate yourself and others about it.- Avoid self-pity. Build up good feelingg about yourself by helping others when you can and by being active.-Try to see positive side of setbacks. Hold on to your sense of humor.-Seek medical help you can trust and follow your doctor's advice.-Try to live as independently as you can. Try not not to worry constantly about having a seizure. Don't let those fears keep you at home. Wear Medic Alert Identification and keep a First Aid card in your wallet so if a seizure happens people will what to do.-Develop friendships. Be a volunteer. -If your seizures Prevent you from working developing some special skill. Learn a language. - Be open, ignore negative reactions. Be pleasantly assertive about your place in the world. - Look after your physical health. - Never, never never forget that you're a normal person who happens to have a treatable medical problem. In every other important aspect of your life you are just like everyone, else with just as much to offer the world, and as much right to a happy life.

       Belinda,

Guess where I got this and how perfect an answer it is to these teens. How can you have something so positive and inspiring on your own website and come on so hardnose to the kids on this site?

For those who haven't visited Belinda's site, I recommend you do. For someone who likes to appear to be uncaring and hard....she has taken the time and effort  to carefully put together a website full of the same as above.

        It also has Belinda's story.

I'm sorry to tell you, but after reading your story, I can see right through that hard shell to that caring heart.

Spiz, you are so right!Belinda, I have also visited your site after reading Spiz' posting. You have some wonderful information for young people (and us oldies).Would be great if you posted some of your inspirational stuff on this site. Sorry if I sounded rude but I was getting frustrated. You could be so helpful to young people who are just learning about all the things you know so well.Stay strong,Maryanne.
