Is it best to shave your entire head or just the incision for surgery?

Mon, 02/07/2011 - 13:47
I am scheduled for left temporal lobe surgery in about 2 months and was wondering if it would be better to just shave my head and let it start scratch from the beginning, or just let them shave where the incision is going to be.  I know it is going to be very itchy when the incision heals, but probably itchy when the hair grows back.  My hair is just below shoulder length right now.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

I have had exactly the same surgery and didn't shave any of my hair. My hair is curly which probably helped but they were really careful with making sure they only shaved a bit off which got covered up with my other hair, no one who didn't know about the op even noticed.

Thanks for sort of helping me out with all of this post here. At the end of 2010 I had a subdural EEG and really, I had no choice, it was exploratory, but doctors shaved all my hair of for that. My hair is just coming back fully now, and at the end of this month I meet with my surgery team (London, Ontario) to discuss right temporal lobe surgery. I keep wondering what they will do - just shave the right side off, or everything again. Then I keep thinking what should I do. Sounds like doctors are not hair dressers, they do what they have to, so I'll go with it and either create a style after or if I can't just go back to square one and start over. Probably just going to be more intense scars all on the right instead of a bunch of little ones in about 5 places all over. Time will tell. To the person who did start this - no matter what, don't worry, it's only hair & short term you can buy really cool hats and scarfs & one thing I've learned because it was doctor's orders for me to use baby shampoo until things got better - well, baby shampoo is just as good as the stuff I once spent $20 on at salons and stuff, and really spending a fortune at a hairdresser is overrated. Some day when I can have a style, I am gonna ask when my hair is ultra short why I can't get charged a guy's rate - after all, right now I have less hair than the guy I'm with - so not fair! Good Luck! GG
