allergies and seizures

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a link between their child's seizure activity and allergy season. We went quading along the alphalpha feilds the other day and my son's eyes totally swelled up into jelly balls. He was so tired out and stuffed up. He had a seizure the next morning. Does anyone think that allergic reactions can lower the seizure threshold? It seems plausible to me as their system would be weakened? --mamajess

This may sound crazy, but- my chiropractor made my allergy to alfalfa go away, permanently, which was helpful as we had horses and live in alfalfa country. He had me bring him a baggie with the alfalfa in it and placed it on my stomach, he made some adustments and used his little tool that I called a thwacker, because that's what it did, and I am still no longer affected by alfalfa. It's been 25 years. Chiropractors, a good one, can help in a variety of ways and are underrated, due in part to the bad rap that some bad chiropractors have caused for the profession, and in part due do the "real doctor's" disregard for them. Anyway, it worked for me and he was actually able to help my kids get over a horrible virus they had when babies, without all the anti-biotics. Kathy

My daughter started having seizures four years ago. The first one was during the spring and she was taking Benedryl for allergies. She has them more frequently during warm weather. We never thought that it is when her allergies are acting up. We even suspected the allergy meds she was taking might be causing it and the dr. prescribed something with out a certain ingredient. I wonder why he has never mentioned allergies. Thanks for starting this post.

Some doctors, are great at treating symptoms, but do not seem to be able to address the problem.  One of those is seizures and allergies.  What they do not understand, they seem to diagnose as a mental issue.  IT IS NOT A MENTAL ISSUE!

I started getting allergy shots a few years ago.   Seizures started soon after.  I stopped the shots, even though the allergist insisted that they could not cause seizures.  I was seizure free for almost 2 years.  I then started the shots again, because of severe allergies and because the doctor said no way could they cause seizures.  The seizures started again, and kept recurring for about 7 months until I remembered about the shots and stopped them again.  I haven't had a shot or a seizure in about 6 months.

I also noticed that seizures were more likely when I had a quantity of dairy, was in a house with an unfinished basement and damp wood(I'm guessing some mold), ate citrus, or was in a closed up house for the winter and had red eyes as if an allergy was being aggravated. (possible dust/mold allergy?)

Please, if you have allergies and seizures, be aware that the shots, where allergens are introduced directly into your body, can lower the seizure threshhold.  Additional aggravation by allergies can trigger seizures.
