Vimpat side effect itchy and severe dry skin

Mon, 04/10/2017 - 07:15
Hi, I have been on Vimpat for almost two years and am now reducing this because I get terribly itchy from it. Especially on my scalp, neck and arms it is so bad I'm scratching all day long and it is turning me crazy. Last week I stopped with Vimpat completely (now taking Keppra 1500mg twice a day), but the itching seems to be only worse then before. Does my body have to get used to not taking Vimpat anymore and will it get better over time? I'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. Thank you, Danique

I've only been on 100mg twice

I've only been on 100mg twice a day for 2 weeks. I've noticed kind of the opposite that I seem to sweat grease and my bo and urine smell different. Vimpat has some weird inactive ingredients. What I think I feel sweating out my skin is the propyethelyne glycol in it. That is an industrial lubricant more commonly known as "break fluid." It has made the texture of my skin feel different and I have to shower about twice as often due to oil/grease feel. My wife is actually allergic to it, found that out many years ago long before I started having seizures or started taking Vimpat. We learned propyethelyne glycol is in everything including pretty much all processed foods and drinks cosmetics etc. Just because it is used to lubricate all machine parts and is technically food safe as far as the FDA is concerned. It can almost burn her skin and she can't have foods or drinks with it. Regular band-aids can give her 2nd degree burns after a day or 2 for example. So even if you stopped taking Vimpat, your body may still feel like it is getting it if you are eating foods, drinking things, or using products that still have some of those same ingredients you may have become allergic to during your course on Vimpat. I always didn't like keppra but over time it got worse and worse (after a year) and I now know that I am allergic to it. I think I probably was a little to begin with but  that the severity increased over time/exposure to it until it become intolerable. Try an allergy test at a dermatologist maybe? They can test for all kinds of stuff you normally wouldn't expect to be in food, drinks, etc. Just a thought but I could be way off. My wife is also allergic to blue #2 and I know one of the Vimpat pills has that or another artificial blue color added to it.

yes I found the same - severe

yes I found the same - severe rash and itch - skin dry and flaky - used dry skin over the counter medication (OTC ) and it seems to help - use medicated OTC meds. my primary doctor also prescribed acute anti itch medication for the severe sudden rash - it calmed my itch and the OTC meds maintain skin not dry. will also note that neurologst would not see me - sent a nurse assistant instead - who could not see a rash and sent me to a dermatologist instead = !!!! this was a guy with an impressive curriculum, who impressed mosty my wife, who is monitoring my blanks for the doctor.my primary doctor hit the nail on the head.

I was put on Vimpat about 2

I was put on Vimpat about 2 years ago. It was replacing the Trilepitol I was on, until the Trilepitol caused me Hyponatremia (very low sodium). I was started at 200mg and noticed I was very itchy. No rash but itchy to the point of loss of sleep. I also woke up to my scalp full of dandruff. I normally have very oily skin until I took the Vimpat. I notified my Doctor about the side effects and he never heard of this issue. The Doctor lowered my dose to 100mg the dandruff went away. My skin itches, my scalp burns, and my skin is so dry. I would never think of using a product with oil in it, do to normally having oily skin. I am using coconut oil on my body. I had  another Doctor tell me Vimpat can mess with your PH levels. I should be drinking a ton of water. I'm glad to see this isn't in my head, that I finally found others who are having similar problems. Sorry to all that are dealing with Vimpat side effects. Btw I seen someone started Keppra, I was taken off due to rage issues. Good luck to you all, let's stay seizure free!
