Does anybody take Keppra on its own to control Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy? I thought it was just an add on and it does not seem to be working totally.

Hey there, I have been on Lamictal for 5 months and have had 4 seizures during that time. I always have myoclonic jerks and seizures before I go into a tonic-clonic seizure. I just went to my neuro today and he switched me to Keppra. I was having major problems with my myoclonics. Have yours went away with Keppra? What "indicators" do you have before you go into a tonic-clonic seizure? I am happy to be on a medication that could potentially rid me of the jerks but afraid at the same time as this has always been my alert to more severe problems. Let me know how you are doing. I hope this will work for me too!! Thanks for your info! Jill W.

Hi Lyn.I'm sorry that it does not seem to be working totally. This is just my two cents worth here, from one that has partial seizures, and who does not take keppra.I really think you need to seek professional advice on this one.The reason why? Keppra (KEPP-ra) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 as an add-on therapy for partial seizures in adults. http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/answerplace/Medical/treatment/medications/typesmedicine/keppra.cfm Also do a search on what drugs are used to treat JME,and you should find this when you do... Treatment for JME Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a common form of epilepsy that usually is easily controlled by treatment with Depakote (valproate) alone. The syndrome usually requires lifelong treatment but with the right choice of medications, people who have JME can live without seizures and without bothersome medication side effects. The usual effective dose for JME is from 500 to 1000 mg of Depakote per day. http://www.epilepsy.com/articles/ar_1068588110.html
