Ear ringing with temporal lobe epilepsy?

Mon, 05/29/2006 - 18:25
Hi, folks. I've read that a ringing in the ears or other auditory sensations can be simple partial seizures. I sometimes get (and typically earlier in the day before a more noticable simple partial) a loud ringing in my left ear. I can still hear fine in my right ear, but in my left ear it sounds like a TV test pattern when the channel goes off the air. It's the only thing I can hear in my left ear, though I can still go on talking, working etc. It lasts about half a minute. Does this sound familiar to anyone? The wierd thing is, my seizure focus is in my left temporal lobe. Doesn't that mean that any auditory hallucination would be in my RIGHT ear? I don't know if the general rule of left brain/right body applies to auditory inputs. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks!

Ok, I've never heard this before, but I'm worried, because my ears ring almost constantly now. Is it possible any meds are responsible for this? I have had a physical recently also, I know it's not that I'm loosing my hearing, or have high blood pressure, the doc checked all that. I haven't had insurance or meds for a while, so I don't remember if any of them any such side effects. If I ever get insurance I'll see someone, but for now it has to be either the sz's or (Heaven help me) I've been wearing my mp3 player too loud (LOL not long enough, this has been going on for years). I'm going to do some research on this, too Susan

Since having a life on AEDs,

Since having a life on AEDs, I've now got a nice case of tinnitus (permament ringing in the ears). When I'm well rested it's easy to ignore, but the more tired I become the louder the ringing gets. Yes I have temporal lobe E... but I didn't miss a day of ringing since the surgery = permanent damage was done by the meds.

I get ringing in both ears,

I get ringing in both ears, sometimes so loudly I can barely hear anything else. Yes, describing it like a TV test pattern works. That's exactly what it is like. It starts off quieter and I can ignore it when it is quiet, but then it gradually gets louder until it pretty much consumes my hearing. Then it tapers off again. I don't know if it is caused by my episodes, but I do know that I am more prone to this ringing on the days that I will have an episode and it gets extremely loud just before I zone out. The ringing isn't constant, I have gone a long time without it before.
