Ear ringing with temporal lobe epilepsy?

Mon, 05/29/2006 - 18:25
Hi, folks. I've read that a ringing in the ears or other auditory sensations can be simple partial seizures. I sometimes get (and typically earlier in the day before a more noticable simple partial) a loud ringing in my left ear. I can still hear fine in my right ear, but in my left ear it sounds like a TV test pattern when the channel goes off the air. It's the only thing I can hear in my left ear, though I can still go on talking, working etc. It lasts about half a minute. Does this sound familiar to anyone? The wierd thing is, my seizure focus is in my left temporal lobe. Doesn't that mean that any auditory hallucination would be in my RIGHT ear? I don't know if the general rule of left brain/right body applies to auditory inputs. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks!

I suffer from Gran Mal Seizures.  Nocturnal before diagnosis at 37.  But I've Always had a ringing.  It seems to bother the left ear.  I'm left handed.  And it Does feel like a Loud, Sharp, ongoing (piiiiiing).  Ongoing for about 1.5min.  Off and on, until it's gone.

Hi Julie, My focus is also the LTLobe and the ringing is in my left ear. I'm not sure if the auditory applies to the left brain/right body either. But the other types of seizures I have affect both sides or either/or also. Does the ringing in your ear ever start off sharp and really painful? Or start out as a low hum and jump to high-pitched and painful? That's how mine generally are. Take care! -Spiz

Hey, spiz. Yeah, mine starts softer then gets much louder, distractingly so, and to the exclusion of any other "sound" in that ear, although my right ear hears just fine and I can keep functioning. It's not quite a pure tone, but almost is. It wouldn't be "noise" if it weren't so darn loud! Anyway, now it's like an early warning that the day might just get interesting later on...
