Any info on Ketogenic Diet

Wed, 02/09/2005 - 18:07
My three year old son has daily myoclonic seizures, as well as some generalized seizures. He is maxed out on Lamictal. He takes B6, and two weeks ago Zonegran was added to his medications. His seizures have gotten a little bit better, but he has lost words, and has regressed. Prior to this, we tried Topomax, and he had a horrible reaction. We want to try the Ketogenic Diet. I just e-mailed Johns Hopkins about it. Have any of you tried it? Any success? Thank you!

Hi Amy,

A new study conducted at John's Hopkins has shown the Atkins diet to be an effective treatment alternative to the ketogenic diet. Here is a link to the article:http://www.epilepsy.com/articles/ar_1103831971.html

Dear AmyQ:

My 6 yr. old daughter started w/ szs at the age of 8 mos. We went through 7 different anti-convulsants with little or no success. We found a doctor in Houston that agreed she was a good candidate for the diet.  After the first 5 days of being on the diet, she went from having hundreds of absence szs daily and an occassional t/c or complex partial sz, to ZERO.  That fast, that simple. Not all kids have that kind of result, but all I'm saying is, it's definitely worth a try. My daughter remained 100% sz free for 12 mos. Since then up till now (a period of almost two years) she has had breakthrough seizures, but nothing compared to what she was having before starting the Ketogenic Diet.

If you need info. on doctors I'll be more than glad to help out. If you want anymore info, please write. I totally understand what you're dealing with and it sounds like you'll go to any lengths to help your child. The diet is difficult at first, but if you make your son understand WHY he has to be on it, hopefully he will be compliant. That will make things much, much easier.  As I stated, my daughter has been on it for almost 3 years. There are times when it's tough, but for her, the benefit FAR, FAR outweighs the inconveniences to her and the family. Y'all are in my prayers. Please let me know if I can be of help.
