Any info on Ketogenic Diet

Wed, 02/09/2005 - 18:07
My three year old son has daily myoclonic seizures, as well as some generalized seizures. He is maxed out on Lamictal. He takes B6, and two weeks ago Zonegran was added to his medications. His seizures have gotten a little bit better, but he has lost words, and has regressed. Prior to this, we tried Topomax, and he had a horrible reaction. We want to try the Ketogenic Diet. I just e-mailed Johns Hopkins about it. Have any of you tried it? Any success? Thank you!

I read your email and I am going through so much with my daughter who just turned 13years old.  How did you get your child on the ketogenic diet.  My child has been on every medicine there is and is now on Keppra and it is doing nothing.  I'm glad that your child is doing better and hope the best for your family.  My name is Cherri.  Please contact me if you can help me with any information.  Thank You so much.

Cherri,To do the diet your child must be under the supervision of a medical team. It is a very serious diet, and people who have tried it on their own kids without the proper medical attention have ended up with their child dying (in some extreme instances). You may want to see if your neurologist deals with it. We live in the Northeast, and we are currently working with Boston Children's Hospital on the diet. In fact, yesterday they did a complete work up on our son, and he will go into the hospital next month to start the diet. I don't know where you live, but.... in the mid-west, I know that the Mayo Clinic is known for the Ketogenic diet. In California, Stanford. In Maryland, Johns Hopkins (they are really the people who have put this diet on the map). Once again, you may want to call your neurologist. In Texas - there are several big medical centers. Statistics show that 1/3 of people on the diet stop having seizures, 1/3 have a reduction and 1/3 do not have any success. Good luck,AmyQ
